New Year, New You! 7 Steps to Success with your New Year’s Resolution

Happy New Year!!!

It’s here… That moment we’ve looked forward to with such excitement!

It’s time to turn the page and write a new chapter….

It’s time to reflect on the year that has just ebbed way, finalize our new year’s resolution and commit to making it all come true.

There’s a feeling a revival, of renewed hope and endless possibility… Of dreams that can be real… Of lives transformed by the simple belief that we CAN and MUST make it all happen…

And yet…

Year after year, most people abandon their new year’s resolution before then month of January has come and gone. Statistics tell us that no more than 8%  of us actually stay committed and see our plans through.

Why is that?

For most of us the answer is quite simple: it may be a new year but our day to day routine doesn’t change much. Our schedules are as full as always with little time to think about change let alone implement it.

So what do you say we change that this time around?

If You Believe You Can…

First and foremost, if you want to bring real change into your life you MUST BELIEVE you are worth it.

And I don’t mean say you are worth.. but LIVE that message.   Yes I hear you saying it.. “Of course I’m worth it…” and yet our kids and hubbies come first.

No.  Sorry.  Not this time.

This year make it YOUR year.

Do something that is meaningful to YOU!

Trust me, when you honor yourself and put yourself first, everyone will be better for it.   You have absolutely nothing to loose and so much to gain!

7 Steps to Making REAL Change!

Here are 7 Steps I take to come up with a fail proof plan any time I want to make an important change in my life, New Year or not.

1. Be Specific

A vague goal is not a real goal.

Be as specific as you can and your goal will be tangible and attainable.

If you want to “get healthier” how will you achieve that?  Will you ad more dark leafy greens to you diet? How and what kind?  Will you commit to a certain number of days and a specific amount of time for your workouts? Will you insist on a minimum of 7 hours of sleep each and every night?  The more detailed you are the better.

2. Be Clear about WHY!

Why is this goal important to YOU?

If losing weight is part of your ‘Get healthy” plan, why is this important?  Do you want to have more energy to run around with your kids?  Run in the park with your kids without getting winded? Be more focused and clear when you sit down to do work?  Feel more confident?  Do you want to set the right example for your family and encourage them to live a healthy lifestyle?  Live longer, play harder, feel better…!

3. Focus on the GAIN (stay POSITIVE!)

Negative words make us feel, well, negative.

They make us feel like whatever we are trying to achieve is hard to accomplish.

Words like “Loose” “Quit” “Give Up”..

Why not focus instead on what you WANT… The good stuff.

Rather than ‘Quit my job’ think  “I want to become self employed and gain complete freedom over my time and daily schedule.

Don’t ‘Give Up sugar”.  Instead think about all the fun you’ll have ‘Discovering new flavors” as you experiment with spices and how much more energy you will have!

Quitting smoking is hard but gaining the full flavor of foods  and running up the stair without getting winded is exciting!

When you think about “getting out of debt” your focus is on debt not on financial freedom, security…

4. Have a clear ACTION PLAN!

Ok so you want to make 2017 your healthiest year yet.  Awesome!

And you’ve defined why this is important to you and everything you hope to gain from this decision. Fantastic!

Now lay out a specific plan of action — How will you change your diet?  What will be the first thing you do?   Will you commit to eating only organic, non-GMO produce? Replace all processed foods with whole foods?  Exercise 5 days a week, at 8am, with your best friend?    Will you change everything at once or make one big change each month for the next twelve months?  Maybe start with a 20 minute walk every day and work up to 1 hour a day by May.

What is your road to Financial freedom?  Will you lay out a clear budget (tax time is a good time to do that) with specific actions to stick to it?  How much money will go into your emergency fund each month?  What about your PLAY fund?  Your vacation fund?  What expenses will you be cutting out?

5. Write it down!

There is something about writing down our plan that makes it more real.

Once it’s there, black on white, we can’t ignore it.

The action of writing in and of itself commits us i a special way.

Write down your goal, as detailed as you can, and place it somewhere you will see it daily. Make a pretty card, add a check list of action steps you can cross off when you accomplish them… Place it on your fridge, by your bedside or on your desk. Pull out your calendar and block out the times you will be doing something specific. If you are committing to 8 hours of sleep every night write down your bed time and your wake up time.

Exercise 5 days a week?  Block out the time in your calendar before you ad anything else.

6. Make it public!

And while you’re at it, grab a partner.

Yes accountability plays a huge part in staying committed to our goal. A partner makes the journey more fun. So post your resolution in a public place, be it in your home, your Facebook page or your blog and keep your community updated on your progress. You’ll get lots of support this way and friends and family to celebrate with you every step of the way 🙂

7. Build on a Solid Foundation!

We hear a lot about the new year being “A Clean Slate” or ” A Fresh Start!”  An opportunity to ‘Put the past behind and accomplish something new”.  But our past is rich with important lessons. Learn form your mistakes as well as past victories and build on that solid foundation.

If you’ve set the same goal year after year but somehow never seem to follow through, take a moment to discover why and make whatever adjustments you need to in order make THIS YEAR the year you succeed!

And don’t forget HAVE FUN!  This is about you, and should feel exited!

So go for it, make a winning resolution and let me celebrate with you when you accomplish what you set out to do!
