Essential Oils, Do They Really Work?

There’s a lot of excitement around essential oils these days and with excitement comes a lot of questions.

Lately, the question I hear more often than not is “Do essential oils really work?”

Essential Oils Do They really Work title image

People who know me well and know that I have been using essential oils for years would probably expect me to answer this simple question with a resounding “YES!!!” but I tend to answer with a more cautious “It depends…”

Yes I use oils for all sorts of things…  Whether diffused through the house to clean the air and promote a relaxing environment…. In home made non-toxic cleaning products or scrumptious beauty essentials… Topically to help boost our immune system or relieve allergy symptoms… There are endless ways to benefit from essential oils and I love experimenting and discovering new favorites all the time.

So yes! Essential oils do work and for me they are an important component of an overall balanced and healthy lifestyle, but it’s important to choose your oils carefully.

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years by pharos and kings, emperors and medical professionals educated in their wonderful properties, and everyday folks like you and me who want to enjoy a healthy, vibrant life as naturally as possible.  After all when God created the earth He placed everything upon it to ensure we would thrive and botanicals have often been referred to as “Earth’s Pharmacy”…

“The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth and he that is wise will not abhor them.” Ecclesiasticus 38:4

So, why my cautious “it depends”?

Because not all essential oils are created equal, plain and simple.

Here are a few things to consider when choosing your oils:

Purity

It’s essential to use oils of the best quality possible to enjoy the greatest benefits. That means you want pure oils made from healthy, non-contaminated plants, grown in clean soil, lovingly tended to and harvested with the proper method and at the right time. The natural plant essences should be extracted by steam distillation, solvent extraction, expression, maceration or efleurage.  Beware of reconstituted oils, or chemical copies of these wonderful botanicals.

You also want to avoid oils that have been diluted in a cheaper carrier oil. One simple way to test the purity of your oils is to place a drop on a sheet of blotting paper. With the exception of one or two particularly viscus oils such as vetiver, your oil should impregnate the blotting paper then disperse and evaporate fairly quickly, leaving nothing but its pleasant aroma. If you have an oily spot on your paper, there’s a good chance a your oil has been mixed with a cheaper vegetable carrier oil.

Packaging

In order to protect the integrity of your oils, they should be stored in dark glass containers — brown, amber or blue are the most common — and keep them away from light, heat and dampness. Make sure caps make a tight seal to prevent contamination and evaporation. The shelf life of a good quality oil is about two years, but very few oils are dated when produced.  I don’t keep my oils anywhere near that length of time so I don’t really worry about this. One of the most pleasant aspects of using essential oils is their delicious aromas so don’t use an oil if you detect a rancid or otherwise unpleasant smell when you first open your bottle

Cost

The price of essential oil varies greatly from one to the other so beware of evenly priced oils and overly cheap oils.  Remember it takes a great deal of work to produce a tiny amount of oil and the price is determined by many things including the ease of extraction, transportation and production cost. Jasmine oil, for example, one of my all time favorite oils, is also one of the  most expensive oils on the market. It takes 8 million jasmine blossoms, hand picked just before the sun turns hot on the first day they open, to produce just about two and a half pounds of oil.  In comparison the lavender plant is much more generous with it’s oil and it takes 220 pounds to provide 7 pounds of lavender essential oil. It’s another one of my favorites and one I keep in stock permanently as it is so affordable.

I’ve always purchased my oils from my trusted local health food store or in France when I visit mom.  That is, until recently, when I was introduced to Young Living Essential Oils by my dear friend Kimberly Grabinsky. Like me Kimberly is someone who insist on the highest quality and takes time to research her options. So I was confident she would not steer me wrong.

When my first order arrived I was elated!

In fact I’m so delighted with Young Living that I decided to not only purchase all of my oils fro them, but to sell them as well.

And because I believe strongly in sharing with you the products I love and helping you make informed decision, especially when it comes to your health and overall wellbeing I want to extend a special invitation to you…
