Family Fun with the Harlem Globetrotters

Growing up in Paris I’d heard about the iconic Harlem Globetrotters but never in my wildest dream did I think I’d ever get to see them live. I figured I’d have to be content with watching their cartoon on Saturday mornings during my summer visits to Texas.

So when US Family Guide invited a few bloggers to their Los Angeles game I was excited to participate.

To be honest I really had no idea what to expect from the Globetrotters other than some really awesome ball handling. And their ball handling skills are really amazing!  In fact I wanted more.  A lot more!  I’d heard the Globetrotters usually do the half time show and dazzle the fans with some super fun ball handling skills but we had a few cheerleading squads at half time instead. I would have much preferred the Globetrotters 🙁

They had some amazing passes, obviously carefully choreographed and beautifully executed at crazy speed.  Whether they were dancing around the opposing team players or dancing across the court on their knees or back dribbling and spinning all the while moving effortlessly around their opponents.

They pulled off quite a few crazy baskets, with wild jumps and basket hangs… and even gave “Tiny” a bit of an unfair advantage…

What I did not know is that these guys are clowns!  The whole game is narrated, the players chit chat with one another commenting on passes, complaining about the calls from the referee.  They talk to the crowd, argue with the referee, and the entire game is interrupted by a series of gags… And the crowds LOVES it!

In all honesty some of these gags were not really my thing, but the crowd was going nuts and my girls were laughing their little hearts out. I loved their instant replay. I found it to be super clever and brilliantly executed.

I think the highlight for my girls was running down onto the court to join the Harlem Globetrotters and hundreds of fans for a special rendition of the Village People “YMCA”

All in all this was a fun evening shared with my family doing something completely out of the ordinary for us.  My 7 year old wanted to grab a photo op and a few autographs but my hubby had to go to work that evening and the lines were simply too long.

  7. I love that this is one of those organizations where they embrace children and families by having wholesome entertainment. Way (way, way, lol!) back in the day, some of the team member’s came to our school to do a special assembly, the fact that I still remember that, tells you what an impression that made!

  8. My son went one time with my husband (I was unable to attend since I was sick) and he had a blast! My family and I’d all have to go one day.

  9. We went a few years ago and had an absolute blast!

  10. I remember watching the Harlem Globetrotters on Saturday afternoons after the cartoons when I was a little girl. They even had a cartoon as well! What a great family activity – just lots of laughs and clean fun. I’m a fan for life! 😉

I used to love these guys growing up.

  12. I don’t enjoy watching basketball on television, but a live game is a different story. I grew up in the Cleveland area and went to see them once. I really enjoyed it.
