The Freshman 15 and How to Avoid Gaining It!

Ah to be in college again…!  Well then again maybe not.

College was such a rich experience that went far beyond the amazing teachers I had, small class sizes (4 in my Chinese Class my senior year), serene mountains of Vermont, meeting some of my very best friends… and I did meet the love of my life with whom I’m still married today.  But it was also a very challenging time.  I was in a foreign country, at a time when Skype didn’t exist and I could only call my parents every other week because of the expense… and I started my freshman year with mono!  No I hadn’t kissed any boys yet so that had nothing to do with it. And weight gain… well let’s just say that I was glad to be in Vermont where we could wear baggy sweaters for a good chunk of the year.

Did you know that 1 in 4 freshman students gains up to 10 lbs in their first semester?

Join me today as I share my experience and simple tips to keep your children from becoming one of the statistics.

There will most likely be plenty of days when you can’t make it back to your dorm room for lunch, and if you are trying to develop healthy eating habits right away, preparing your own lunch some days will help (and may also help you save a few bucks)!

  1. Well we just went through the F-15s in our house my daughter came home from college carrying with her just a ‘little bit’ more than she took with her. Even though I provided her with lots of tips on healthy snacking and a personal sized blender for making smoothies, the extra weight gain. Staying up late, studying and the occasional midnight pizza runs were unavoidable. She has since lost the weight after being at home and in the fall she will be living on her own. I think having more control about what goes in her meals (which she will be making) will make a difference to being on the college meal plan, as convenient and easy as it was I am sure there were hidden sugars and salts in many campus cafeterias.

    • Mandy those are excellent points you make and what we hear from many freshman who tried their best to make healthy choices but still gained weight. Everyone who stopped eating cafeteria food and made their own meals had much greater success in keeping the weight home. That was the case for me as well. When I moved off campus and was able to prepare my own meals, every changed. Whether on or off campus, I believe this is the best way for students to not only control the quality of the foods they eat, but the portion size as well. Late night snacking is a huge culprit, especially since students do tend to go for the easy pizza, or other carb heavy option. A protein shake would make a better choice but may not be the most attractive option 😉 Best of luck to your daughter as she embarks on her sophmore year!

  2. My husband recently went back to school to do his masters. It didn’t occur to me he might pick up on some of side effects that impact younger students. Let’s just say we’re walking more and eating more veggies as a result of his academic pursuits. 🙂

    • I think we are vulnerable at any age… especially when suddenly change habits… whether he’s spending more sedentary time due to studying or snacking more… So glad you’re supporting him as he makes the necessary changes to get back to his old self 🙂
