The Simplest Way to Peel an Onion

I peel and chop a LOT of onions, and yes that means I cry a lot. I’ve tried all the tricks in the book and sadly I have not yet found the trick that works for me to not cry.

I hold on to hope that some day I will…

What I have figured out, however, is how to swiftly and efficiently peel an onion.

This works every time and with every kind of onion — yellow, white, sweet, red…

Here’s how it works:

Start by cutting off both ends of your onion.

Cu Cutting second end of onion

Place the onion upright then cut in half

CU knife and onion

Rotate onion a quarter turn then cut in half again so that you have 4 quarters.

You’ll notice that the peel will start to fall off as you cut.

Finish off by removing the peel that has stayed on the onion.

Love this tip! Now I just hope it works! I love to make lots of casseroles that call for onions and I’m always tearing up before I’m done! 🙂

    • Oh I feel your pain Farrah but remember this is not a “no cry” tip but simply a way to make peeling an onion simple and fast… I’ve found that some onions are worse than others when it comes to triggering a downpour and I try to use the ones that are the gentlest on my eyes. Good luck!

Next time I will win the onion vs. me battle!
