Totally Turmeric – Health Benefits of This Wonderfood

Health Benefits of turmeric title imageAs is often the case, my mom is the one who introduced me to one of my favorite spices: turmeric!

Also known as curcumin, turmeric is a root vegetable from the ginger family with many of the same healthy benefits. Mom has been suffering from Arthritis for many years, and her doctor suggested she add turmeric daily to her diet to help reduce inflammation and relieve some of the pain.

Since she shared this wonderful spice with me, it’s been a staple in my kitchen. I keep it well stocked both fresh and powdered. I love it’s unusual taste and will often grate fresh turmeric on my salad.

I’ve also used it in home made remedies to treat a sprained ankle for example. And a teaspoon of powdered turmeric in a cup of warm milk is a delicious to help relieve a headache! My 8 year old loves the taste of it and will drink it a night as a special treat before bed.

Turmeric has been used for centuries in all sorts of folk remedies, as well as in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine and is now widely available so that we can all enjoy it’s wonderful healing properties.
